How to Apply for a “Self Help Grant”

To apply for a “self help grant”, the applicant should:

• be unemployed/underemployed for 3 months or longer
• be at least 18 years of age (unless foster youth)
• be actively preparing themselves for employment or be registered a job/vocational training program (i.e. ROP, Job Corp, WIA, DHA)
• submit an application with employment and or character references, and
• provide proof of need showing that the grant will increase their ability to obtain employment

1. The grant application will be completed by the applicant, and signed off by a job training program operator/instructor if applicable.
2. A letter of reference will be submitted from the program operator, religious leader, prospective employer, teacher or similar appropriate person. The letter should substantiate the applicant’sapplication, need and job readiness.
3. A proof of need should also be submitted in the form of an estimated bill for the cost of tools, car repair, childcare, job or interview clothing, etc. Your application will not be considered unless this is complete. (Please attach proof of need).
4. The application must be delivered or postmarked no later than January 8, 2010 by 4:00pm. to the MLK Grant Committee:

5. Successful applicants will complete an interview to assess their job readiness.
6. The applicant must participate in an interview to be scheduled at 915 Broadway. You will be notified and given an interview time.Any additional information can be obtained from May O. Lee, at 916.454.1892 The applicants will be interviewed by a panel from the MLK 365 Grant Committee Decisions of the panel will be final. References will be checked and all information provided will be verified. The recommendations of the job training program operators will weigh heavily in the decisions. Applicants who require translations during the interview process should provide their own interpreter or make prior arrangements with the committee.
7. The grants will not be payable directly to the recipient. Gift certificates for clothes, tools eg;Sears, Big O Tires, etc.) will be redeemable for the items to be purchased to the store or acheck to the vendor providing the services (child care provider, SMUD).
